Our Mission

SCAR provides personalized, one-on-one physical therapy, fitness and sports performance training, and wellness programs that empower our patients, clients, and members to live their best lives.

SCAR’s Owners

Jim and Michele Herkimer, both physical therapists, have owned SCAR since 2007, and the facility has been at its current location serving the communities of Orange County since 1973. Jim and Michele’s vision is to to provide the highest quality of care and friendliest service, employing the best staff, in a genuinely welcoming environment that fosters total wellness.

 

Meet Our Team

Jim Herkimer - DPT, MS, ATC
DPT: University of St. Augustine MS: Sports Medicine/Exercise Science, Chapman University MPT: Physical Therapy, Chapman University BS: Athletic Training, California State University, Sacramento Certified: Athletic Trainer, BOC; Track and Field Coach, USATF Jim has lived in the city of Orange his entire life. He spent his youth in local sports programs as both an athlete and as a coach. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a BS in Athletic Training and received both his Master of Science degrees in Sports Medicine/Exercise Science and his Master’s in Physical Therapy from Chapman. Jim completed his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. A certified USAT track and field coach, Jim has served as an advisor to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport and is currently a member of the State CIF Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. He has an extensive background in exercise prescription, sports conditioning, manual therapy, and functional rehabilitation. Jim also serves as an adjunct faculty member and clinical instructor for the Physical Therapy and Health Sciences programs at Chapman University. “Helping people overcome injuries and perform better in sports and life has always been very appealing to me. The variety of people I treat and the excitement on their faces when they feel better is gratifying. Patients enjoy being educated about their bodies and empowered to take better care of themselves. I see myself as a catalyst for helping others live better.”
Michele Herkimer - MPT

Michele has lived in the North Tustin/Orange area most of her life and has been very active in local sports programs and charities. She graduated with a BS in Kinesiology from UCLA where she was a member of the UCLA Snow Ski team, a community project leader, and a Peer Health Counselor.

After graduation, Michele pursued her master’s in Physical Therapy from USC. While she spent a couple years working in both orthopedics and pediatrics, Michele knew her primary aspiration was to help children. She spent the next 15 years following her passion working as the district physical therapist at Anaheim City School District as well as in a few different pediatric settings.

In 2007, when Michele and Jim purchased SCAR, she took over the financial and operational side of the business. She is very proud of the business they have built in the community she grew up in and loves hearing about the exceptional care a patient or fitness member received at SCAR when running into someone around town. In her free time Michele loves to walk her dogs, hike, snow ski, and spend time with her family.

Kelly Berardini - MHA, ATC

Kelly joined the SCAR team as our Operations Manager in 2016. She is a board-certified athletic trainer with a unique range of clinical, administrative, and academic experiences in various settings, including hospital systems, collegiate, high school, and performing arts sports medicine.

Before coming to SCAR, Kelly served as a faculty member in Chapman University’s nationally renowned Athletic Training Education Program where she instructed several undergraduate courses, built relationships with affiliated clinical preceptor sites, and spearheaded program marketing activities.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Chapman with a dance minor, Kelly was Head Athletic Trainer at Western High School in Anaheim. She then launched the athletic training and injury prevention program at Disneyland. During her six-year tenure as Head Athletic Trainer at the theme park, she coordinated care for more than 1,000 Entertainment Division cast members. After she completed her master’s degree in healthcare administration at Chapman, graduating summa cum laude in 2001, Kelly served as Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Anaheim Memorial Medical Center.

Kelly lives in Orange with her husband and son and enjoys her family’s participation with local youth sports organizations. “My son says that I’m the best team mom ever!”

Caroline Wilson - DPT, OCS
DPT: University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA BS: Biology, California State University, Long Beach Caroline has lived in Southern California since 1971. She graduated with a BS in Biology and Chemistry from California State University, Long Beach and earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from USC. She has specialized in orthopedic rehabilitation since graduating in 2002 and serves as a Certified Clinical Instructor training and mentoring physical therapy students from numerous local universities. Caroline is an avid softball player and competitive triathlete, having qualified for the Ironman World Championships held in Kona, Hawaii in 2017 and 2019. “I have always been fascinated by the human body and how it functions. Physical therapy reminds me that each client and situation is different. I am constantly changing treatment protocols, updating my skills and keeping open to new ideas and techniques to meet my patients’ unique needs.”
Lizz Cherry - DPT
DPT: University of Rhode Island BS: Kinesiology from Westmont College In addition to providing excellent care to our patients with orthopedic injuries, Lizz has expertise in treating concussions and vestibular disorders. Lizz completed her undergraduate studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, graduating with a BS in Kinesiology, and then went on to physical therapy school, earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Rhode Island. Lizz received the 2011 URI Research Excellence Award, for her research on lateral epicondylitis, a chronic overuse injury commonly known as “tennis elbow.” Lizz lives in the city of Orange with her husband and two children. She enjoys volunteering at her children’s school, running, going to the beach, and scrap-booking.
Brent Talley - DPT
DPT: University of St. Augustine BS: Kinesiology from Chapman University Brent’s path toward physical therapy began with his love of playing sports while growing up. Having been a three-sport athlete during high school – football, basketball, and baseball – Brent experienced multiple injuries, which sparked his interest in rehabilitation. He earned his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Education from Chapman University and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in Austin, Texas. Brent has completed the multiple courses required to obtain his manual therapy certification. He has conducted research regarding treating patients with various spinal conditions, including directional preference and McKenzie methods for treating low back pain. In his spare time, Brent loves spending time with his family and friends, cooking and being outside- hiking, playing golf, football, basketball, or baseball.
Mike Adams - MS, PTA, JSCC

MSC: Sports Medicine/Exercise Science, Chapman University

BA: Physical Education/Athletic Training, Chapman University

Certified: Strain/Counterstrain Practitioner, Jones Institute

Mike is a native Californian and has lived in Orange since 1974. He is a graduate of Chapman University with a Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine and is a Certified Athletic Trainer.

Mike has an extensive background in physical therapy with a speciality in manual therapy. He is certified by the Jones Institute in the Osteopathic technique of Strain-Counterstrain, which is used to decrease pain and dysfunction within the body. There are very few certified Strain-Counterstrain practitioners (an estimated 100 practitioners nationwide), and SCAR is proud to have Mike on our team. He is also an advanced myofascial release practitioner with more than 15 years of experience. Mike teaches Strain-Counterstrain at many local universities including Chapman, University of La Verne, and Azuza Pacific University. “My specialty is manual therapy, and many of my patients suffer from complicated, hard-to-treat conditions, including complex spinal issues. I enjoy helping people get better, which improves their lives.”

Margaret Ha - MS ATC
MS: Kinesiology, California State University, Fullerton, CA BS: Athletic Training, University of La Verne, La Verne, CA Certified: Athletic Trainer, BOC; RockTape FMT Basic & Performance Certification Margaret was born and raised on the small island of Guam in the Pacific. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training at the University of La Verne.She went on to achieve her master’s degree at California State University, Fullerton. While in graduate school, Margaret taught anatomy and physiology labs and lectures to undergraduate students at the university and served as a graduate assistant to the CSUF Athletic Training Program. During that time, she also conducted concussion research and presented her work at multiple conferences. Margaret currently provides athletic training coverage for several local soccer clubs, as well as the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) for the West Region in addition to her role at SCAR.
Leo Cruz - CSCS, CES
BS: Kinesiology, California State University, San Bernardino, CA Certified: Massage Therapist, Southern California School of Massage, Riverside, CA; Strength and Conditioning Specialist, NSCA; TRX Class Instructor; Corrective Exercise Specialist, NASM Leo received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from California State University, San Bernardino. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a Certified TRX™ trainer. He is also a licensed massage therapist. A California native, Leo has trained a broad range of athletes, including many triathletes seeking optimal performance goals by conducting VO2 max tests, designing individualized strength training regimens, and assisting with biomechanical running evaluations. Leo has participated in numerous triathlons and half marathons across Southern California. He also has coached youth basketball and volunteered with the Special Olympics. “I became intrigued by PT after suffering a knee injury playing college football. I love getting up every morning knowing that I’m here to make people feel better about themselves. It’s an honor knowing that people come to me in the hope of reaching higher ground. It’s my mission to help them get there.”
Cory McBean - CSCS, CPT
BSc: Kinesiology, California State University Fullerton, CA Certified: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), Certified Personal Trainer (NASM), TRX Class Instructor Cory graduated from Cal State Fullerton University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in strength and conditioning. He attained his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the NSCA and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification from NASM. Cory was born and raised in Orange County and has a passion for all sports, especially hockey and has played both roller and ice hockey since he was 7 years old. Cory also played lacrosse for Foothill High School, winning a CIF championship in 2008. Cory’s passion in the sports industry is for increasing the fitness levels of athletes and to do so while minimizing their risk for injury. He also enjoys training non-athletes to help them achieve a healthy lifestyle.
Jeff Lynch - PTA

Jeff received his BS from California State University of Fullerton in 2011 with an emphasis on Athletic Training. It was there that he developed a passion for physical therapy and strength and conditioning. Jeff completed his physical therapy assistant program at Concorde College in 2014. He is currently studying to achieve his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification (CSCS). Compassionate and dedicated to his patients, Jeff has an amazing work ethic and is focused on providing both great customer service and high quality care.Jeff was born in Chicago where he was a gymnast and soccer player in high school. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and traveling abroad.

Heather Burbridge - PTA
Heather is an Orange County native and graduated from UC San Diego in 2012 with a BS in Neuroscience. At UCSD, she was an NCAA DII athlete in cross country and track and field. In 2017, she completed her physical therapy assistant degree at Cerritos College. Heather developed a passion at an early age for helping others return to their daily activities post-injury. This has now led her to begin her physical therapy doctorate program at the University of St. Augustine, which she will complete while working at SCAR. In her free time, Heather enjoys camping with her family and being outdoors.
Sarah Wisher - Pilates Instructor

Sarah Wisher has been teaching Pilates since 2012 and is a certified instructor with both Balanced Body and Pilates Method Alliance. She recently completed her bachelor’s of science degree in Gerokinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys gardening, spending time with her family, making soap, and she is learning to ice skate

Kyle White - PT Aide
Kyle graduated from Grand Canyon University in 2018, earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy. His undergraduate experience included cadaver lab volunteer work, being a founding member of the GCU Physical Therapy club, and helping with different lab courses while at GCU. Before attending GCU, Kyle attended Fullerton Junior College and Villa Park High school. Kyle previously interned at SCAR during the summer of 2017, and completed an internship at Rancho Santa Margarita Physical Therapy. Kyle enjoys going to Disneyland, playing basketball, and trying out new and adventurous foods. Kyle plans on becoming a physical therapist to further his passion for helping people live their best life possible.
